Thailand Activities - Thai boxing (Muaythai)
Thailand Thai boxing
A world-renowned
spectator sport cum martial arts, Muay Thai Kick Boxing,
has its roots all the way back from the 15th century Thailand.
Watching from a spectator’s point-of-view even on
home TV is quite an adrenaline pumping and heart stopping
activity all the more seeing it live. Furious punches
with a blood stained fist, crushing elbow and knee combination
blows, and quite lethal kicks along with masterful parries;
indeed, this deadly sport is considered an art to many.
The heavy surge of passion and drama from the boxers as
well as from the spectators is being blended with accompanying
Javanese clarinets, drums and cymbals from the ceremonial
beginning of each match to emotional end. Side betting
around the stadium is not encouraged but is a covert practice.

Boxers are very well trained and always maintained in good
condition most especially during regular fights. Their
relationship between their teacher and coach is considered
very divine as it is highly ritualized. At the beginning
of every fight, boxers are made to perform a special dance
called by the locals as “ram muay”. The
dance entails them to wear a headband, thought of as a sacred
talisman, awarded by their trainer for several years of
well-earned dedication. The dance is ritualized starting
with “wai khru” characterized as a practice
of kneeling and bowing three times in sign of great respect
to the teacher. When this ceremony is completed, the
actual fight rolls.
The fight
consists of five rounds in three minute-intervals each.
Unlike the usual boxing match, the opposing players may
hit all parts of the body except the head. Common
counter-attack moves include a strong high kick on the neck,
elbow thrust to the face and head, knew hooks to the ribs,
and low crescent kicks to the calf. The boxer in attack
may even grasp the opponent’s head between his hands
and pull it down to meet an upward knee blow. The
weakest and uncommon defence and attack move is punching
which is done just to soften up the course of action.
The big highlight of a fight is ending it with a painful
and full-forced knee or elbow strike.
Thai kickboxing may be experienced mostly in Boxing Stadium
at Lumphini Park, Bangkok or in Phuket Boxing Stadium along
Phuket Road. Tourists, normally males, who don’t
mind much violence become so enticed to this sport that
some basic courses are as well offered for the public.
